The Different Types of Mountain Bike Grips

The different types of mountain bike grips fall into one or multiple of the below categories. The type you choose will depend on your riding style , hand size/shape and  budget.

Standard Mountain Bike Grips

These grips are normally spec’d on most mountain bikes when purchased. These are round shaped where the ergonomics of the grip are the same from end to end. In essence they are designed to fit the average sized hand and are ideal for short to medium ride lengths. The main benefit of these grips is their durability and cheaper purchase price.

Endurance Mountain Bike Grips

Endurance grips are designed to allow you to put your hands flat on the handlebars to rest them from maintaining a constant grip.  As you ride for long periods, particularly in non-challenging and unchanging conditions, you can avoid hand fatigue setting in by switching between resting and gripping.

Ergonomic Grips

These grips are designed to fit around your hand shape and not the other way around. Because of this they are comfortable and avoid putting your wrists at painful angles. This allows you to have a good grip on the bike without requiring as much force as a standard grip. In addition they’re usually designed in such a way that you’ll also have a place to comfortably rest your hands as with the endurance style grips.

Fat Grips

The fat grip is designed to fill more into our hands for more cushion against the rough terrain. This acts as another form of damping along with the suspension fork to stop vibrations from the wheel travelling up through your hands. Essentially they are designed for those with bigger hands for a more comfortable fit to with their grip.

Horned Grips

Some switch their handle bars to the horned type to allow for a different hand position. Following the same philosophy, these grips are also designed for a similar purpose, to give an additional option for hand position to avoid grip fatigue. Many mountain bike riders prefer this hand position during endurance rides.
