Top features of electric mountain bikes to look for
Dual Battery
Top eMTB motors usually come supplied with 750W motors for a respectable torque rating of around 80 – 90Nm. Dual battery electric bikes boast 1000W+ motors.
These bikes have greater range and much higher pedal assist mileage, a worthwhile consideration if within your budget.
Full LCD Coloured Screens
Latest E bikes have beautiful full color LED screens as part of their cockpit. Look for these over the monocolor screens, sometimes spec’d even on budget e-mountain bikes.
USB Ports
There should be USB ports available as standard to charge your electronic devices. Either on the battery itself or as part of the display in the cockpit.
Dual Suspensions
If comfort is one of your highest priorities on your new e-mountain bike then ensure that the bike is spec’d with a dual/full suspension system.
The extra suspension at the rear of the bike paired with wide tires will allow the bike to float effortlessly over imperfections in the road. In addition it will take the edge off of large drops and raised bumps.
High range electric only modes
E-mountain bikes usually have up to 6 modes to chose from. The two main modes will be throttle mode for fully electric operation and pedal assist mode (PAS) for boosted pedalling operation.
High range full throttle modes are desirable for those who wish to use the bike for long journeys without effort. This range will of course vary depending on conditions such as the the elevation gained and wind direction.

Baggage carrying capacity of e-mountain bikes
Max loading weight typically exceeds 350lbs. Many e-mountain bikes also come stock with rear pannier racks for useful baggage mounting points. Their frame shape is often useful for frame bags to be strapped into the main triangle.
Front pannier racks compatible with mountain bike forks can be used. It is possible to load racks to their maximum capacity before having reached the e-mtbs total weight limit.
Benefits of Fat Tires on E-Mountain Bikes
As you may have noticed many electric mountain bikes come stock with 4″ ‘fat tires’ over slimmer tires usually found on most non electric mountain bikes.
These tires are usually found on fat bikes, bikes designed to be capable of riding through terrain covered in heavy snow.
As such these tires are extremely grippy, as the large contact patch with the ground provides plenty of traction.
E-mountain bikes are fitted with fat tires as the increased contact with the ground helps with braking more quickly. In addition the larger surface area of the tires allows for the tires to be run at lower pressures.
The lower tire pressure acts as an additional suspension, smoothing out imperfections and bumps on the road. This in combination with a front or dual suspension, means the level of comfort of E-Mountain bikes is unrivalled by other E-bike alternatives.
Battery and Motor Warranty Periods
Before considered a purchase carefully consider the period of warranty that the battery and electric motor are covered for. A good e-bike company should be confident in the quality of their product and as such offer a good warranty period in case things go wrong.
Most manufacturers will offer at least a 1 year warranty on the motor, charger, battery and controller.
Schwinn offer a long 2 year warranty on the battery and electric assist parts on their Schwinn Healy Electric Bike.
The bicycle frame is usually covered by a 2+ year warranty and in most cases a lifetime warranty. This applies to rigid frames only and usually excludes the front suspension fork.
