12 of the Best Mountain Bike Triangle Bags – Bikepacking Bags for Beginners

Mountain bike triangle bags are one of the most practical ways of carrying items on bikepacking trips. When travelling long distances you don’t want to have uncomfortably huge and unbalanced loads on your back.

To last the distance, its preferable to ride with your movements unrestricted. That means having full control and freedom to manoeuvre around the bike to switch riding positions when one gets uncomfortable.

Frame triangle bags are a solution as these bags tuck nicely inside the frame making great use of all the available space.

What qualities to look for in frame bike triangle bags?

  • Secure – The bag needs to have a secure mounting system to the frame. You don’t want it loose and moving around upsetting your balance and potentially damaging the frame. Worse yet you wouldn’t want the straps to fail completely and bag fall from the frame when you least expect it.
  • Waterproofing – Bikepackers needs to be prepared for the worst case. Rain can be a very real possibility on a ride. In addition,  travelling across small pools of water can cause parts to become wet.
  • Slim profile – Ideally you’d want the mountain bike triangle bag to be as unrestricting to your legs as possible. Slim profile ensures it won’t get in the way of your pedalling by rubbing against your legs.
  • Multiple compartments and pockets – Depending on what your carrying, multi pockets can prove very useful utility by allowing access to the things you want simpler. Compartments protect items from becoming damaged by others. Lastly it gives you the option of sorting by type.
  • Visibility – As a matter of safety, reflective parts on bag are a plus when riding at night to improve visibility levels. High visibility gear is proven to reduce risk of accident over not being worn in dark conditions.
  • Reachability – You want the frame bag and its contents to be within reach on the saddle. Consider the ease at which zips and pockets can be opened and undone to access the content.

BEWARE BEFORE YOU USE YOUR BAG – Avoid Frame Damage:

So you’ve just got a hold of that new frame bag you wanted and can’t wait to put it on your bike and ride.

You strap it on and it fits perfectly just as you imagined,  great! Off you go on an adventure with your brand new shiny bag.

After several days of riding like this you come back one evening after a good workout and finally take the bag off. To your horror you find that all the strap points have severely smudged the paint on the frame!

To avoid this problem and keep your frame paint looking new and scratch/chip free, you want to get some 3M clear tape
as protection for the strap points. This saves repainting and helps hold value on the bike if you’ll ever sell it down the line.
An easy win.
